The Dark Side of the Moon

The Dark Side of the Moon is the 8th studio album of the rock band Pink Floyd. It centers on conflicts, greed, the flow of time, death and madness. What makes the album famous is its use of musique concrete and its lyrics that are full of philosophical thinking. Either side of the album is an independent and continuous chapter.

I interpret the lyrics and sound effects in the songs in my own way and present my understanding of this album with illustrations. To demonstrate the continuity between the songs, the elements at the end of each illustration will be seen in the next one.

Speak to Me begins with heartbeats. After various sound effects it suddenly turns into breaths. I draw the transition from under the water to the surface of water to present this song.

Breathe. I extract the element of a rabbit digging a hole from the lines, and make it the main subject. By repeating the chasing I aim to present the futility of chasing goals for all our life.

On the Run is a song with almost no tunes. Sound effects like engine, footsteps, breaths, murmurs and creepy laughter are added into the rapid rhythm, which generates anxiety and horror. After an explosion, everything calms down. Giving free rein to my imagination, I depict the scenes of chasing in an airport and a plane crash. Other than that I leave the lower half of the image blank to make the audience feel it falling.

In the intro of Time, all the alarm clocks and wall clocks ring out of the blue. The lyrics say we rue the day we dawdle away our time only when we lose everything. To present my interpretation of these lyrics, I draw an image of the protagonist postponing what he should do in the day and regretting at night.

Great Gig in the Sky is the last song of side A. It’s a song without lyrics. There is only one murmur that shows the contempt for death. Thus I choose to present the attitude of staying cool and collected in the face of death.

Money is the first song of side B. The song begins with the sound of a gambling machine. With colloquial words, it demonstrates the worship of money. There is a saxophone solo in the song, which reminds me of a casino.

Us and Them is an anti-war song. The lyrics show us the agony that people who are forced into the battlefield face and the choices that they have to make.

Any Colour You Like has no lyrics or sound clips but many can interpret the song’s message to be – you are the master of your universe, your own destiny so make it any colour you like.  Thus I would put the elements in previous illustrations here. People make different choices and destiny can lead people to different destinations.

Brain Damage tells us a story of a mad man. The Dark Side of the Moon, the name of the album appears twice in the lyrics. I choose to depict the estrangement and intimacy between people and their negative emotions and how they bring themselves to face their heart.

As the last song of the album, after mentioning “everything”for many times, Eclipse ends with “And everything under the sun is in tune/But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.” The lyrics show bleakness and gloom. I choose to depict the scene of Flower Power, a documentary photo taken in Vietnam War. I make this scene that is filled with various emotions as the end of this series of illustrations. In here, everyone is fighting for what they treasure.
